The Surprise

I never thought I’d know how it felt to have the wind knocked out of my sails.  Today, I had that feeling over and over again.  It was as if a butterfly was dancing nervously inside my stomach, taking its cue from my mind’s chatter.  The sensation made me so uneasy and weakened that I was certain I could not go on.  The surprise had crept up so suddenly and changed my life so dramatically that I couldn’t imagine another path to my once one-dimensional life.

Alabama Summer

Eating honeysuckle from the vine which straddled the iron fence in my grandma’s backyard was my favorite part of summer.  I decided, as I plucked the nectar from the marigold yellow stem, that today would be a wonderful day to tackle the big hill.

The sun beamed down and warmed my now medium-brown tanned legs as I strolled to my green super deluxe bike (an old-fashioned bus so the other kids said).  I yelled to Tony, “are you going too?”  He replied, “yep” and jumped onto his yellow ten-speed by throwing one leg wildly over the bike’s bar.  We rode off.  The wind whipped at our face and as we played a game of zig zag through the street, Tony’s shirt billowed in the wind.  I was excited about finally going down the big hill.  That is, until I reached the top of the hill and surveyed my journey to the hill’s looming end.
